2018 Kia Niro Plug-in hybrid

Since 2016 Kia has been manufacturing the Niro, a small hybrid crossover which managed to catch the attention of quite a few people. The car is nothing special when it comes to performance or looks. However, it is quite well made and it offers a really efficient powertrain. So far the car has only been available as a hybrid but not that long ago they also released the 2018 Kia Niro Plug-in hybrid. The car is quite similar to the regular version but it features a different powertrain. This gives is a longer all-electric range which further increases the fuel efficiency of the car.

This means the car is basically a front wheel drive hatchback with the look of a crossover. This is not exactly a bad thing as the car comes with none of the drawbacks of a crossover.

It drives quite well on the road, it is relatively stable and it gives the driver quite a bit of feedback which is unusual for a crossover.

There have been some rumors about a sportier version but for now, the car is doing quite well and we don’t see this happening anytime soon.

Redesign

In the front the Niro shares quite a few design cues with Kia’s current crossover.

As previously said, the car features a far more different design than the regular plug-in hybrid. Instead of being a boring sedan or hatchback, the car looks a lot like a crossover. It is quite tall and quite long and its long wheelbase gives it a rather aggressive look.

In the front the Niro shares quite a few design cues with Kia’s current crossover. However, unusually enough, it doesn’t boast the four-LED cluster design which is an interesting choice.

The headlights are slightly swept-back with European vibes while in the rear the large tail lights do make the car look a lot bigger than it really is. The only real drawback of the design has to be the blue inserts which don’t go that well with the rest of the look of the car.

Once again, the blue inserts are still here but this time around they do complete the general look of the car. Thanks to its long wheelbase and high roof-line, the 2018 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid has quite a bit more passenger room than most of its rivals.

Engine, Specs

The gasoline unit boasts 104 horsepower which is not that much in comparison with today’s engine.

As most cars in this class, the new plug-in Niro features a relatively low power engine. This includes a 1.6 liter naturally aspirated inline-four mill which drives the front wheels alongside an electric motor. The gasoline unit boasts 104 horsepower which is not that much in comparison with today’s engine.

However, it features quite a few fuel efficiency upgrades meant to make it as efficient as possible at highway speeds. The electric motor on the other hand will add an extra of 60 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. As said before, the car is front wheel drive with all of the power being sent to the front wheels via a dual-clutch automatic.

Even though the combined output is just 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, the car feels quite fast for what it is. Thanks to all the fuel efficiency upgrades, the Niro will return up to 48 MPG in the city and 44 MPG on the highway. This is not as good as the Prius but it still is much better than most other crossovers on the market.
