2019 Ford Explorer Redesign

2019 Ford Explorer Redesign

With nearly a quarter of a million vehicles sold last year, the Explorer is one of Ford’s best selling vehicles. Unfortunately the car is quite old at this point so it doesn’t use Ford’s current technology and manufacturing process. In order to streamline its production, Ford is going to release a new version in the near future. So far they decided to keep quiet about this new model. However, the new 2019 Ford Explorer has already been seen testing so we do have a pretty good idea about what to expect from the future.

2019 Ford Explorer Rumors and News

Ford confirmed a while ago that the platform under the current version of the Explorer will not be used in any of their cars.

Instead, the new 2019 Ford Explorer will be based on Ford’s upcoming D6 architecture. This will be a fully modular platform specifically designed for large front wheel drive cars. Here you can read the review about the new Jeep Wrangler 2018

Unfortunately this also means the Explorer will remain based on a unibody platform. While this is great for on-road applications, it isn’t all that good for anything else.

This should still be fine though as the Explorer managed to carve a market segment all by itself. On top of using a new platform, the new model is also going to become larger.

The spy shots clearly showcase the car’s longer and wider body. On top of that, it also looks like the wheelbase may be longer. Coupling the larger body with the lower weight, the car will be able to offer a far better ride quality and more space without any drawbacks.

Price and Release date

New explorer is expected to be available for purchase in second half of 2018 as 2019 model.

Price should remain the same as for current model: $32,000 for base model, with additional goodies raising price up to $54,000. Read about Ford Explorer 2019 on Wikipedia

The camouflaged test mule allowed us to get a pretty good idea about what to expect from the future 2019 Ford Explorer.

It looks like instead of a revolutionary design, the car will receive a more evolutionary look.

From the spy shots we can see the car’s front end is not really all that different over that of its predecessor.

However, the grille seems to be larger and it actually seems to have a different shape, more similar to what the Edge has to offer. From the profile we can clearly see the design cues taken from the older car.

However, the glasshouse is bigger than before and it also looks to be more aggressive. The rear of the Explorer prototype had a dual-exhaust system and a large roof spoiler.

Even though we would love a high performance model, this is more than likely going to be the car’s regular mid-range model.

The current model is based on the Taurus so it is nearly identical to it inside the cabin.

The new 2019 Ford Explorer will likely change all of that.

So far Ford was quite conservative when it came to the interior design of their cars. Well, the new version of the Explorer could be the first to receive a brand new design scheme, more similar to Ford’s European models.

Some suggested the car could get a far more minimalist-looking dashboard with a large center-screen as the control center. We would love to see this but unfortunately it is unlikely and especially so on the Explorer.

2019 Ford Explorer Engine and Specs

Most rumors seem to suggest that the 2019 Ford Explorer will lose its V6 engine.

While this is possible, we are not so sure about it. The base car will ditch its old 3.5 liter V6 for a new 2.3 liter turbocharged inline-four.

With around 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque this will offer a more usable output while using less fuel than the V6.

Some said that the car could also receive a hybrid. Even though this is still a long shot, this is quite possible, especially when we take a look at its rivals.

Both of these engines will be offered with front or all wheel drive. Also, both of them are expected to use a 9 speed automatic.

The range-topping Explorer is still an unknown at this point. The current model has a 3.5 liter twin-turbo V6 which is capable of more than 350 lb-ft of torque. It looks like the future model might ditch this engine.

In its place we could see a 3.0 liter V6 with twin turbochargers. With anything from 350 and 400 horsepower and over 400 lb-ft of torque, this should make the Explorer the fastest crossover in its class.
