2021 Lexus Powered By an Inline-Six Straight From the 2020 Supra!

Could the current partnership between Toyota and BMW extend into the Lexus? The Best Car magazine in Japan indicates that this could be the case. The magazine indicates that the new Lexus IS sports sedan may have a straight, inline-six engine from the new 2020 Toyota Supra.

This 3.0 liter powerplant churns out 335 horsepower. In addition to the Supra, it is also found in the BMW Z4. This engine could improve the standing of the Lexus IS in the compact luxury sedan category. It could also make the sedan a firm competitor of the BMW 3 Series. Here is more on this.

Progressive indications in the Toyota-BMW partnership

Toyota and BMW have had a fruitful partnership over the years. It resulted in the creation of a new Toyota Supra. Now, the partnership seems as though it will extend into Lexus territory. A report by Best Car magazine in Japan reveals the new turn in this relationship. It also adds that the BMW I-6 engine will be one of the options available to drivers when purchasing the new Lexus IS. This powerplant will be presented alongside the 2.0 liter turbo, 2.4 liter turbo and 2.5 liter Hybrid engines which are already available for this vehicle. With this in mind, we’re all wondering if this new engine will replace the 3.5 liter V6 engine that’s been a Lexus staple?

Changes in the Lexus lineup

In addition to the inclusion of a BMW engine, there are other changes in the Lexus lineup that are inspired by BMW. The report also indicates that the Lexus IS F performance could be re-introduced. It has been noticeably absent from the IS lineup in the past few years.

The last time that IS F was available, it was built on a second-generation IS. This model went out of production in 2013. Thus, if the marque seeks to reintroduce the F version, it will have to be based on the new, fourth-generation 2021 Lexus IS.

What type of powerplant

According to the report, the new 2021 Lexus IS could have a BMW inline-6. With this in mind, we’re all wondering what kind of engine will power the performance IS F version? Could Lexus bring back their 5.0 liter V8 engine or will they use their new 3.5 V6 engine which produces 416 horsepower?

Tuning specifications

If the BMW inline 6 engine is used to power the 2021 Lexus IS, it may not be tuned to the same power levels as the 2020 Toyota Supra or the new BMW Z4 Roadster. This is because the new Lexus IS is not competing in the same category as these sports cars. It is firmly in the sports sedan segment. Here, it competes against the Mercedes C Class, Audi A4, Genesis G70, Acura TLX and Infiniti Q50. It already has ample competition in this class.

Competition with its partner

By putting a 3.0 liter inline six from BMW in the 2021 Lexus IS, Toyota could beat the BMW 3 Series. This is a smart move for Toyota but not BMW. The new Lexus might unseat the most popular model in the BMW lineup.

For now, we are sure that Lexus is releasing their fourth generation IS in 2020. Whether the BMW inline 6 is going to feature under the hood is still up for debate. The partnership between Toyota and BMW continues to intrigue us all.
